Why Freestanding Bathtubs Are Perfect for Your Bathroom Renovation

Freestanding bathtubs come in a variety of styles and materials, allowing you to create the look and feel that you desire. Looking for a way to add a touch of luxury and class to your bathroom renovation? A claw-foot bathtub might be just right. If you’re looking for a modern design, then a solid surface freestanding tub offers numerous options to take your bathroom to the next level.

The “freestanding” style of bathtub has been around for centuries and is re-emerging as a very practical and stylish trend in bathroom renovations and modern design.

This style of bathtub come with many other benefits that make them ideal for any bathroom remodel. For example, they're designed to minimize water waste and maximize relaxation. Plus, they're easy to clean and maintain – perfect for a busy household!

In addition, freestanding bathtubs are great for creating a more spacious feel in your bathroom without sacrificing style.

Plus, Freestanding Tubs compliment Walk-in Showers really nicely.

The Many Different Style of Free-Standing Tubs

A freestanding bathtub refers to a tub that stands alone and does not need to be installed into an alcove or against a wall. The classic claw-foot tub is a great example. In 2023 we have many options in free-standing tubs shapes, colors, materials, function and more…

Some come with a shower head installed for a combo unit, or jets built in for increased relaxation. The ones you see in the popular home décor design magazines range from single- or double-sided slope models, slipper models in single and double sided. In addition, you will see Claw-foot tubs are still popular and smaller free-standing tubs such as the Japanese soaking tub.

  • Single-Ended Tubs - will have a slope on one end and a straight end where the hardware is installed. These models are great for reclining into.
  • Single Slipper Tubs - are like the single end versions but have a raised back which allows for better support and the ability to sit up further while bathing.
  • Double-Ended Tubs - have slopes on both end and often have the hardware in the middle. This allows for you to recline from either direction, opening your bathing experience.
  • Double Slipper Tubs - have both sides raised and will typically have the faucet in the middle. This allows for you to sit-up and read or enjoy the jets for longer.
  • Claw-foot Tubs - are your classic bathtubs in the old photos, and movies. They got their name for the brass claws that often held the tubs above the ground. Traditionally made from porcelain these are very heavy and durable bathtubs.

What is the Best Material for a Freestanding Bathtub

This is a common question we get, and the answer is often, it depends. The things to consider are budget, design requirements and functional requirements. The more common materials today are acrylic or fiberglass, they offer a great looking bathtub that is easy to clean and light. Acrylic offers some benefits over fiberglass; however the quality acrylic tubs don’t scratch or crack as easy as a fiberglass tub. There are various other materials such as porcelain, cast iron, copper, resin, stainless steel, and even stone bathtubs available.

  • Acrylic Tubs – Cost effective, numerous styles, different grades available, Light weight
  • Fiberglass Tubs – Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) most cost-effective material. prone to fade, cracking, and scratching
  • Porcelain over Steel Tubs – or Enameled Steel, cost effective, steel sheet formed, Porcelain covered, Limited shape and size, prone to chip, easy to maintain, high gloss
  • Cast Iron – Long lasting, formed molten iron, Layered in Enamel, Heavy, Insulated, more expensive
  • Solid-Surface Tubs – Marble dust combined with acrylic, resins, pigments, epoxies, and other agents form stylish bathtubs of various shapes, sizes, and colors, easy to maintain, more expensive
  • Stone and Wood Tubs – Marble, Granite, Basalt, Sandstone, Onyx, Teak Wood, Custom Order, Variable Maintenance, Design Specific, More Expensive,

Again, it depends on your needs and budget. As you can probably gather from the materials above the price of a free-standing tub varies significantly depending on the material and size you choose.
